How to Manage Anxiety

Managing anxiety and increasing feelings of well-being

‘Don’t worry ~ be happy’

It’s not always as simple as that… If someone had said this to me when I was 22 and suffering from anxiety and acute panic attacks I might have laughed, had I been having one of my feeling better moments. It’s not easy to be happy when your emotions go through the roof a number of times a day, without warning.

When fear gets this out of balance it can seem impossible to control. Feelings of extreme anxiety or panic are completely overwhelming. The body reacts as if a lion is standing in front of you. This is known as the ‘fight or flight’ reaction. It is very physical and real, even though there is no lion!

Even mild anxiety can hamper our lives, sitting in the background taking our energy and positivity.

Calming the mind and the body has a positive effect on our emotions. Here are a few simple things you can do to help reduce anxiety right now

Slow and soften the breath. Take long, slow breaths to calm yourself down, pausing after breathing What’s the worst that could happen if you just let go? out. Breathe deep into your tummy or diaphragm, rather than shallow breaths into the chest.

Sit and relax your body as much as you can. Notice where you are holding the tension and see if you can relax those areas more on each gentle out-breath.

What's the worst that could happen if you just let go?

Think kind, positive thoughts and re-assure yourself. Talk yourself down.

Call a friend or loved one. Talking to someone you trust can help.

When you are feeling less anxious, exercise is a good way to help the body release stress hormones that have built up in the body. Exercise helps us feel good again by releasing our feel good hormones.

If the anxiety feels severe, it may be worth considering your options in seeking support from a health professional. Kinesiology sessions can support you alongside any conventional medical treatment you may be having.

It may be that you need to make life changes (change of job, relationships for example) to reduce the stress and anxiety in your life, if this is appropriate for you.

Kinesiology and Reiki healing are very relaxing modalities that can leave you feeling calmer and can help you to get your energy back. You can release stress in a gentle and safe way and learn simple, powerful techniques to regain control of the stressful reactions your body has learnt.
